‘I got you’

I love this phrase. It used to have a pretty limited meaning – just a concrete ‘let me help you out,’ spoken to a stranger (usually) observed to be in an obvious predicament. But it has now sweetly expanded to include all sorts of acts of empathy and benevolence. It contains a component of fellow feeling and respect: I have put myself in your shoes, my fellow human, and see that you are in distress. And it proclaims that you are willing to cross the social frontier which stands between strangers to try to help. What could be lovelier or more loving?
